Eligibility Rules Change for the PGA Awards, and DGA Awards Due to Covid-19

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Producers Guild of America and Directors Guild of America will temporarily allow films that have not received a theatrical release to qualify for their film awards this year. These exceptions were expected, since the Oscars, Golden Globes, SAG Awards and Spirit Awards have also changed their rules to do the same. The PGA will temporarily allow movies premiering on streaming services, that were “forced to have initial nontheatrical public exhibitions or distribution”, be eligible for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award. The DGA is also temporarily changing eligibility requirements in the Theatrical Feature Film, First-Time Feature Film, and Documentary DGA Awards categories for “films that establish they had a scheduled or planned bonda fide theatrical release with a commercial motion picture theater distributor chain in Los Angeles or New York after March 13, 2020 when the theaters closed – and were instead distributed on video on demand (pay-per-view or streaming) on a national platform for at least seven (7) consecutive days.”
